Extend support to people affected by cancer with a befriending scheme within your service or support group.
Befrienders, who have had an experience of cancer, are able to provide a real understanding based on a shared experience. They can also offer practical tips, and a chance to talk to for people who are newly diagnosed or undergoing treatment.
This is why befriending services are an excellent way of providing supporters who can offer understanding, practical tips, and empathy for people who are newly diagnosed or undergoing treatment.
There are five modules, you can work through them in any order:
- What is a befriender?
- Recruiting befrienders
- Confidentiality
- Dealing with difficult situations
- Training and support for befrienders
These modules are designed to help you to think through how you can set up a befriending service so that it is meets the needs of the people affected by cancer and in which the befrienders are well trained and supported.
